Rothenburg is the prize of all medieval towns. There is no longer a castle, but the wall of the city remains. It was a very affluent city in the middle ages until the 30yrs war and it was stricken by poverty. The city itself escaped harm until WWII but only a portion of the city was destroyed. The popularity of Rothenburg picked up after the war as a prime tourist spot. It sits on what is now known as the 'Romantic Road' that stretches from Frankfurt down to Fussen. The train we were on crisscrossed it at several points. It would make an incredible drive.
